For Ryan P., earning his bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree at 返字心頭-Los Angeles was more than just an academic journey it was an experience filled with learning, growth, and meaningful connections.油

Graduating as valedictorian of his class, Ryan credits much of his success to the hands-on learning opportunities and the supportive faculty that guided him through one of the most challenging and rewarding programs in healthcare education.

Jumping Into BSN Clinicals

From Day One, Ryan knew nursing school wasnt going to be easy. But the chance to apply what he learned in the classroom to real-life healthcare settings made all the difference.

I had a lot of great clinical sites and I came across a lot of great clinical instructors and nurses at the facilities, Ryan said. They put us in great spots, so I had opportunities to get my hands in there and be thrown into the fire.

These hands-on experiences helped Ryan grow his confidence, sharpen his skills, and understand what it really means to care for patients in high-pressure environmentskey preparation for his current role as an ER nurse.

A Strong Faculty Support System

One of the biggest highlights of Ryans time in the BSN program at 返字心頭 was the strong support system he found in his instructors.

They were always super, super helpful super warm, Ryan recalled. You could always call them day or night or send them emails or texts.

Even after the term ended, many instructors remained accessible to him, eager to answer questions or provide guidance. Ryan emphasized how meaningful those relationships were, not just for his academic journey but for his overall confidence as a nursing professional.

Even if you ran across a problem later, you could text them, like, Hey Professor so-and-so, I have this issue or didnt understand this can we talk about it? And theyd find five minutes for you.

Facing Challenges and Growing Through Them

Like many BSN students, Ryan had his fair share of difficult days. One in particular stood out.

It was my first pharmacology examthat was one of the rough days, he admitted. But you rely on those around you. Talk to your instructors, talk to your friends, and get back at it the next time. You just keep pushing through. You cant give up.

Ryans story is a reminder that perseverance and support go hand-in-handand that no one gets through nursing school alone.

Advice from a Valedictorian: Be Ready to Work, But Youre Not Alone

When asked what advice hed give to students beginning the BSN program, Ryan kept it real.

I knew it was going to be pretty tough going into it, and I think I was ready for that aspect of it, he said. There were definitely some challenging days along the way but to be expected. Everybody hears about how tough nursing is and getting through the school portion of it.

Ryan recommends that incoming students lean into the resources WCU provides and embrace the team environment that nursing naturally demands.

Make friends at school dont think youre going to do it by yourself. Make friends with your peers, your colleagues, your instructors. That team environment? Thats what nursing is all about.

When Jimmy N. decided to become a nurse, he wasn’t just choosing a profession he was following a calling that began with his service as a military medic. From the battlefield to the bedside, Jimmys journey reflects the grit, growth, and purpose that drives many healthcare professionals. As a proud alumnus of both the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs at 返字心頭, Jimmy shared his personal experiences, advice for aspiring nurses, and how WCUs support systems made all the difference.

Why Nursing? A Calling Rooted in Service

For Jimmy, healthcare wasnt a career option it was the only path that made sense.

Healthcare is the only thing I know… After high school I went to the military, was a medic, then an EMT, and then I decided to become a nurse, he said.

That same sense of service and desire to help others made nursing the natural next step. Jimmy found fulfillment in making a difference in peoples lives, something he calls the best decision Ive made.

The best thing about being a nurse is just being able to help people, he said.

Advice to the Next Generation of Nurses

Jimmy knows firsthand how challenging nursing school can be. His message to future nurses? Start early and trust yourself.

I would recommend doing it sooner rather than later… that way you expand yourself more, he said. Ill tell myself Ill be okay. Just take it easier.

He also encouraged students to care for their mental health and take the long view when things get tough. Like many nursing students, Jimmy had moments of doubt, especially during his OB-GYN coursework.

Going through OB… My girlfriend at the time my wife now sat down, helped me out and we talked through it, Jimmy said.

A Flexible, Supportive Online Learning Experience

One of the key advantages Jimmy highlights is the flexibility of WCUs online MSN program, which allowed him to advance his education without sacrificing his work-life balance.

They make the program so easy to get in and get things done, he said.

Online courses enabled him to work as a critical care nurse and instructor while progressing toward his advanced degree. Combined with responsive faculty and structured virtual support, the online experience gave him confidence and continuity.

Whether studying between shifts or attending class from home, Jimmy made the most of WCUs online environment and encourages other nurses to do the same.

Nursing with Purpose and Perspective

Today, Jimmy works as a critical care transport nurse and teaches EMT courses, applying lessons from his time at 返字心頭 daily.油油

After more than a decade as a nurse, Trish N. was ready to take the next step in her healthcare journey. Shed seen it all long nights in acute care hospitals, fast-paced days at ambulatory surgery centers, and even staffing shifts across departments in large health systems. What she wanted next was a way to make a bigger impact, and thats where 返字心頭s Master of Health Administration (MHA) program came in.

Ive been a nurse since 2012, the same year I had my baby, Trish shared. I got my vocational nursing license and started working at Kindred Hospital. That gave me a strong foundation I saw how critical patients can get, and how important our role is in helping them recover, or sadly, sometimes not.

Building on a Strong Foundation in Clinical Care

With over 10 years of hands-on experience, Trish had developed a passion not only for patient care but for understanding the systems that support healthcare delivery.

I started in long-term acute care, then moved into ambulatory surgery, which was fast paced. I liked seeing patients recover quickly after surgery and go home to their families. That was very rewarding, she said. But I also started noticing how each facility operated differentlysome were more efficient, some had more complaints, delays, or issues. That got me interested in the management 壊庄糸艶.&稼恢壊沿;

That curiosity sparked something deeper a desire to lead, influence, and improve the healthcare system from the inside.

Taking the Leap into an MHA Program

During the pandemic, Trish received a message about WCUs online MHA program. At first, she thought it might be spam. But after researching, she took a leap of faith.

I wasnt sure if it was real, but I thought why not give it a try? I didnt even know a program like this was out there for someone like me. But I applied, and I got accepted.

Despite having earned a bachelor’s degree in Vietnam, Trish was nervous about returning to school especially in a new country and in a new language.

I was excited but scared, she said. It had been over 10 years since Id been in school, and everything had to be in APA format, professional writing, with proper grammar and layout. But I learned. I asked for help when I needed it, and I stayed up until 2 a.m. sometimes to get my work done.

A Program Designed for Working Professionals

One feature of the online MHA program at 返字心頭 is its flexibility designed for working healthcare professionals to balance jobs, families, and education.油

If I can do it, anyone can, Trish said. The school has a great system. The professors, even the dean, were supportive. If I was a little late for an assignment, Id get a gentle reminder. They motivate you and guide you.

Over the course of the two-year program, Trish explored ethics, leadership, healthcare finance, and more.

You start with topics like ethics, which are so important in healthcare. Then you move into business topics, IT, and management. By the end, youre thinking about the whole healthcare system not just your department.

From Student to Educator and Leader

After graduating in 2024, Trish found a role that was directly tied to her MHA degree.油

Now Im working as a clinical instructor for an LVN program, she said proudly. I get to pass on what Ive learned and continue growing. Im still learning too, building confidence and communication skills.

Looking ahead, Trish isnt stopping anytime soon.

I want to do more. I want to see change in the medical field. We need more leadership in healthcare people with a good heart, with passion. People who can guide others and help teams work together toward something bigger.油

Trish believes the MHA program at WCU helped her put fuel in the tank for that next phase of her journey.

Its like you fill up your gas tank with knowledge and now the engine is ready to go. You just have to turn the key.

Advice for Future MHA Students

For anyone considering enrolling in WCUs Master of Health Administration program, Trishs message is clear:

Dont hesitate. If you have the desire to lead and make a difference in healthcare, this program gives you the tools. You can work while going to school, and time goes by fast. Before you know it, youre done and youre ready.

Interested in Becoming a Leader in Healthcare?

返字心頭s online MHA program is designed for working professionals who want to make a greater impact in the healthcare field. Learn from experienced faculty, gain practical leadership skills, and graduate prepared to take on management roles across the healthcare industry.

After serving five years in the Marine Corps, 返字心頭 BSN alumni Adam B. found himself asking, Whats next?

With no desire to pursue a medical career, Adam began working in the wine industry and studying marketing but soon wanted a more fulfilling career. He pursued a role in the San Diego Fire Department and worked as an EMT, but when he was exposed to nursing everything changed.

I found myself more drawn to the medical side than the rescue aspect, and after meeting nurses in the field, I knew I was on the wrong career path, he said.

Adam began searching for the right school for him, but they all had a waitlist. A friend recommended looking outside of San Diego and focusing the search on schools with accelerated programs. After visiting WCU-Orange County, he knew it was the right place for him.

I interviewed at many schools with long waitlists that just werent as impressive, he said.

Adam quickly set goals of becoming an ER nurse and enrolled at 返字心頭 shortly after his initial visit.

As he approached graduation, Adam was determined to stand out in the job application process. He took a job as an ER tech at a children’s hospital to broaden his experience working with both children and adults. After three weeks of working there, he fell in love with pediatrics.

I know thats a very short time frame, but I just loved working with the kids, he said.

After graduating with his BSN in 2018, Adam became a pediatric specialist, training staff in pediatric care in the ER. It was during this journey and witnessing the staff struggle to place infant IVs that Adam developed another calling: entrepreneurship.

To help the staff improve IV placement on the first attempt, he developed a makeshift vein finder in his garage.

This sparked my interest to make a commercially made vein finder for infants that was affordable and easy to use, he said.

Together with a friend and fellow PED nurse, Adam developed the Firefly Vein Light.

Recently, Adam was honored with the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award at the 2025 WCU Alumni Awards, celebrating alumni who have demonstrated exceptional success in entrepreneurship.

Coming from a university, where they celebrate alumni making an impact beyond bedside care its truly special, he said. Were trying to enhance the quality of care for kids. And so, this award means more than you know.

While Adam is focused on expanding his companys portfolio with additional medical products, he recently earned his labor and delivery certification and plans on pursuing that specialty this summer.

Ive always wanted to do labor and delivery, he said. I originally decided against it because I figured it would be a little harder with my background and being a male nurse, but Im excited for this new venture.

WCU alumni returns to help teach students at Dental Hygiene Clinic

返字心頭 dental hygiene instructor Katie B.s story is a full-circle testament to the power of community, education, and a passion for healthcare. After graduating from WCUs Dental Hygiene program in 2014, Katie returned in 2017 not as a student but as a faculty member eager to give back to the next generation of dental professionals.

Being a student here, I really loved 返字心頭, and I was eager to come back and continue what the faculty did for me, Katie said. They provided me so much to make my dental career so lucrative and also just so fulfilling.

Now a dedicated faculty member, Katie is helping students bridge the gap between the classroom and clinical practice. Her dual role as an educator and working clinician allows her to bring real-world experience into her teaching. She focuses on giving students practical tools and insights that help them transition smoothly into professional practice. Hearing from former students who feel confident and well-prepared in their new roles is one of the most rewarding parts of her job.

I like to work with students and give them real-life experience because I am still working clinically, so we work in a lot with tips and tricks and things to be able to move from clinical in school to clinical in private practice.

Katie is also passionate about community service. One of the highlights of the dental hygiene program is the annual Smile Camp, where students provide no-cost dental cleanings, X-rays, and education to local children. For many students, this is their first hands-on experience working with pediatric patients.

Its an incredible opportunity for them to apply everything theyve learned in a fun, supportive environment, Katie shared. The camp not only helps the community but also instills in students the importance of giving back through their profession.

Katie encouraged prospective students to come ready to learn and embrace the fast-paced, hands-on approach at West Coast. With technologically advanced equipment, extensive faculty support, and a commitment to student success, West Coast Dental Hygiene stands out as a leader in preparing future hygienists.

When you come to West Coast, we have every experience you could possibly imagine from technology to hands-on training, she said. Our faculty are here full-time for you so we bring in the newest innovations that we can use with our students so when they go into private practice, they’re prepared.

For Katie, the reward is simple: seeing her students thrive, just like she did.

Coming back as faculty after being a student is giving what I was able to receive, so I hope that if one student can take away something that I’ve taught them into their real world — that is exactly what I’m here for, she said.

For Emma T., graduating with a Master of Physician Assistant (MPA) degree from 返字心頭 marks the culmination of years of effort, perseverance, and a deep love for medicine. Standing proudly in her graduation regalia, Emma reflected on the significance of the moment.

It blows my mind, actually, Emma said. I never thought Id be standing here. This is something Ive dreamed about and worked so hard for.

A Baylor University undergraduate with a degree in health science studies, Emma knew early on that she wanted to pursue a career as a physician assistant. She was drawn to the PA profession for its team-oriented approach and versatility.

I didnt want to go to medical school Im not the type of person who needs the title or to be the top dog in the room, she said. Im team-oriented, and I love that PAs have the ability to learn constantly, switch fields, and provide intentional, patient-centered care.

While the program was rigorous, Emma found joy in the challenges and camaraderie of her peers and faculty.

The hardest part wasnt the material itself I loved learning medicine, and it clicked for me, Emma said. The challenge was figuring out what kind of provider I want to be. Medicine isnt black and white. We always talk about the art of medicine, where two things can be true, and you have to work with both to give the best care.

Emma also highlighted the positive culture within her program. As a student leader, she played a role in shaping that experience.

Our faculty really care about us as people, providers, and now colleagues, she said. Their investment in us made us want to be great.

As for her next steps, Emma hopes to work in pediatric surgery, where she will assist in procedures, conduct hospital rounds, and manage clinic visits.

I love the mix of surgery, hospital work, and clinic it keeps me on my toes, she explained. Emma advises future PA students to savor the experience, even when it feels overwhelming.

Lean in and lean on the people around you, she urged. Start every day with a mindset of learning something new, even if its hard. Youll grow as a person and a provider.

Now, with her white coat and the world of medicine ahead, Emma is thrilled as she prepares for her board exams and a new career.

Im excited to start this next chapter and see who else I can help in the future, she said. This is the start of something amazing.

Queenstar K. knew balancing school and family responsibilities while attending 返字心頭 would not be easy, but one thing she didnt expect was to fail a class. However, with the support of WCU staff and her unwavering determination, she crossed the stage as a proud BSN graduate in 2024.

There was a point where I thought I was done, Queenstar admitted. I said to myself, Im not going any further. But one professor told me, You are not quitting. You will get through this. That encouragement pushed me to keep going.

Failing a class was a tough blow, but Queenstar viewed it as a stepping stone rather than a setback. She found strength in the camaraderie of her peers, particularly her new study group.油

We studied together, held each others hands, and sometimes met in coffee shops to keep pushing through, she said. They even called me grandma because I was always pushing them, even if they were sleeping!

Queenstar also leaned heavily on the tools and resources offered by WCU.

The professors were amazing, and I took full advantage of the resources. I met with professors one-on-one, joined study groups, and used every tool the school had to offer, she shared.

Her perseverance didnt go unnoticed by her family, who traveled from Canada, New York, and Connecticut to celebrate her graduation. They are waiting to scream when I cross the stage, she said proudly.

Looking ahead to 2025, Queenstar is ready to reenter the workforce and make a difference as a nurse. She also plans to pursue her masters degree.

If you know nursing is your passion, focus on it, she said. Dont do it because you need money but do it from your heart.

Bea M. always felt in her heart that her life purpose was to help people. However, initially, she stayed away from nursing, wanting to forge her own path. As a child, she observed her mother and aunts working as nurses after arriving in the U.S. from the Philippines. Bea went on to try acting, dancing, music, sports, and social work before realizing nursing was her true calling. In March 2024, she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from 返字心頭s Los Angeles campus.

Growing up in the suburbs of the Bay Area, Bea recalled the pressure to succeed. As children of immigrants, there was a lot of competition with one another, she said. I was bullied a lot as a kid. I didnt pick up things as fast as the others. I thought maybe I wasnt smart enough to be a nurse.

After working in social work, Bea determined it was not the career for her. She decided to study abroad in Seoul, South Korea. I did some searching within myself, she said. With these new experiences and meeting people from all over the world, I gained a new perspective that I should give nursing a try.

After returning, she began a vocational nursing program just as the world entered the pandemic. Afterward, Bea recognized that nursing had been her path all along. That was the first time in my entire life that I finished something with academic honors, and I realized that maybe I was actually good at this, she said. I made it this far — I might as well continue.

While working at an acute psych clinic, Bea applied to the LVN to BSN program at WCU. I moved out here with just luggage and couch surfed until I finally got an apartment and job that I could balance with my schoolwork.

Throughout the program, Bea said she faced imposter syndrome. Because of my past being bullied, I struggled a lot with my mental health, she shared. But as soon as I started nursing, I felt like this was the way I could make a difference.

Bea quickly bonded with her fellow classmates and faculty. She particularly appreciated her time with Professor Jennifer Uebe. We still keep in touch to this day. She inspired me to be more confident in my clinical decision-making and to stand up for myself, Bea said. She always treated her classes as a team sport. I was used to doing things on my own, but knowing there is a team behind you helps so much.

Today, Bea works as a critical care nurse in the intensive care unit at a Southern California hospital. She described being proud she has made it this far, noting that her mother worked in the same unit and specialty. During harder moments, Bea has been able to lean on her mom through their shared experience. The first time I ever lost a patient, I remember going to my car and crying, and my first thought was to call my mom, Bea said. My mom told me, Did you do everything you could? Did you give it your all? I said yes, and she said, Then that is enough. It gave me a sense of peace. Especially in this career and unit, that is it. We do our best. We give it our all. At the end of the day, that is all we can do.

Bea is proud of her status as a WCU alumni. Ive met a lot of coworkers and whatnot who were also WCU nurses or alumni, and theyve always been the best people to work with in my experience, Bea said. To be one of them and to hopefully carry on that same care is to embody the pride and reputation I’ve been given.

After graduating from the rigorous two-year Master of Physician Assistant program at 返字心頭-Texas, Anthony I. walked across the stage on commencement day with a well-earned sense of accomplishment.

Now, he is setting his sights on the next step: Passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE).

Right now, my main focus is on passing the PANCE, he said. But Ive been looking at the job market, too. Im just excited to put all the skills and knowledge Ive gained into action.

Anthony, who earned his undergraduate degree in 2020 from Texas Tech, described his excitement about WCUs program and his reasons for pursuing the PA route.

I always knew I wanted to be in medicine, either as a doctor or a PA, he said. But my personality is that I get bored easily, so I wanted flexibility. As a PA, you can switch specialties whenever you desire that really sold me on the profession.

Reflecting on his time at WCU-Texas, Anthony emphasized the value of the relationships built during the demanding program.

Besides gaining the clinical skills to care for patients, the best part was the bonds you create, he shared. You lean on your classmates, family, and support systems, especially during those ups and downs. The victory today is just as big for them as it is for me.

The journey was not without its challenges. For Anthony, the hardest part was balancing work, studies, and life during clinical rotations.

You go to work, come home, sleep, and repeat the cycle, he explained. At the same time, youre constantly studying for exams every few weeks. Its about pushing through burnout and remembering the end goal.

Anthony expressed gratitude for WCU-Texas, noting how the program exceeded his expectations.

At first, I was hesitant because its a newer program, but I never felt like just a number here. The faculty and staff were proactive and supportive, always meeting us halfway to find solutions, he said.

Looking ahead to 2025, Anthony is eager to begin his career in healthcare and make a difference in patients lives.

Thats why we go through all of this, he said. Im ready to put it all to use.

WCU-Ontario BSN graduate gives speech during pinning ceremonty

At 返字心頭s January 2025 nursing pinning, student speaker Valerie A. took the stage with a message that resonated deeply with her fellow graduates: Remember your why.

Reflecting on the challenges they faced rigorous exams, sleepless nights, and the weight of clinical responsibilities Valerie acknowledged the perseverance that brought each student to this moment. But beyond academic struggles, she urged her peers to look inward and recall the deeper reason they chose this path in the first place.

For Valerie, that moment of clarity came in January 2019 when she stepped into an overcrowded emergency room for the first time.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, where she performed CPR on 839 patients. What she saw the patients sitting on floors with oxygen tanks, isolation tents overflowing, and nurses crying in supply rooms on their nonexistent breaks left an indelible mark. These experiences, she said, put lifes everyday anxieties into perspective and ignited a calling that would change the trajectory of her life.油

“I walked into that ER as a blank slate, unsure of how this experience was going to change me, but within a few months, I found myself applying to 返字心頭 on a path that would change the trajectory of my life forever,” she said.

Now, as she and her classmates step into the next phase of their careers, Valerie acknowledged that new challenges await. Nursing is more than a job it is a profound responsibility. They will witness both the fragility of life and the joy of bringing new life into the world.

“We’re going to experience a new form of anxiety that will challenge our innermost tenacity. You may have the unimaginable duty to hold somebody’s hand in their final moments. You may also witness the joy of bringing a new life into the world, but ultimately, you will share in the raw vulnerability that patients experience when they walk into those acute care settings,” Valerie said. “I want you all to remember we’ve been chosen for this honor, and I want you all to remember your ‘why.’ We’re about to have a profound impact on the people around us, and it is our insatiable appetite to help others that have shaped us into the nurses who sit here today.”

Valerie closed her address with gratitude thanking her family, professors, and fellow students for their support throughout the journey. And as she looked ahead to the future, she left her peers with a powerful reminder:

“We all had a dream stepping through the doors of 返字心頭. Now, weve achieved the ultimate accomplishment. Congratulations, January 2025 cohort I cant wait to see you all in the clinical setting.”
