Each term, the Nursing leadership team at 返字心頭-Ontario hosts a Meet & Greet event, providing students with the opportunity to connect with faculty and leaders in a relaxed, welcoming environment. This terms event featured cookies and milk and welcomed special guests Dean of Academics Dr. Chamberlain, and Dr. Dashti, Associate Dean of Academics. Students engaged in casual conversations with their academic leaders, helping to put faces to names and build stronger connections.

“The Meet and Greet events are hosted by nursing leadership and we invite a leader from another department to join every term. This provides a more casual environment to talk with students, meet them where they are and have fun,” WCU-Ontario Dean of Nursing Amie Howard shared.油

Howard noted the positive impact of the events, adding, “It’s been very refreshing to get out of the office and engage with our students. It gives students an opportunity to put a name to a face and get to know campus leaders beyond email. We hope over time, this will create a better sense of belonging and culture of togetherness for students.”油

For many students, the event served as a chance to engage with leadership outside the typical classroom setting, breaking down barriers and fostering stronger relationships.

“The genuine surprise and joy students showed when engaging with us really stood out. Interactions between students and Deans are usually formal and structured, so having the chance to connect in a relaxed, social setting was refreshing. It allowed us to get to know our students betterand gave them a chance to see a different side of their Nursing Leadership Team,” WCU-Ontario Associate Director of Nursing Kevin Aquino shared.油

The Nursing Leadership team looks forward to continuing these events each term to strengthen connections and support student engagement.

When Natalie A. first set out to explore a career in healthcare, she envisioned herself in speech therapy. However, a twist of fate led her to discover her true passion in occupational therapy.

“I was volunteering at an outpatient rehab hospital in my local area, shadowing a speech therapist,” she recalled. “When my speech therapist was out sick, I was placed with an occupational therapist instead. I honestly didn’t know what OT was at the time, but spending the day with her and witnessing how she treats patients holistically made me fall in love with the profession.”

Choosing 返字心頭

Natalie’s journey to OT school was not immediate; after graduating from UC Riverside, she worked in various healthcare-related roles, including as a research assistant in clinical research and later transitioning to Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, where she worked with children on the autism spectrum. These experiences solidified her desire to pursue occupational therapy.

After learning about 返字心頭 from a friend who was already enrolled in the program, Natalie decided to explore further.

“My friend told me that West Coast had a family-oriented feel, which really resonated with me,” she shared. “I attended an open house, toured the campus, and met the faculty. I was so impressed by the supportive environment that I knew this was the place for me.”

Faculty Support and Mentorship

One of the aspects Natalie values most about her experience at 返字心頭 is the support from faculty members. “The faculty here are incredibly caring and challenge us in the best ways possible,” she said. “My faculty mentor, Dr. Dor, has been instrumental in helping me prepare for my fieldwork interviews by providing guidance on resume building and interview techniques. Thanks to his support, I secured my fieldwork placement at an outpatient neuro rehab facility.”

Gaining Hands-On Experience

Natalies dedication to her studies led her to an exciting opportunity as a research assistant with Dr. Picus and Dr. Kier, faculty members at 返字心頭. “They posted an announcement on our Canvas portal, and I decided to apply,” she explained. “Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into the research process, which has been crucial for my OTD Capstone project.” Natalie worked closely with faculty to conduct focus groups and gain a deeper understanding of the research process, an invaluable asset for her doctorate journey.

Fieldwork and Future Aspirations

Natalie is set to begin her fieldwork rotation in Torrance at an outpatient neuro rehab facility specializing in treating clients with neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and Parkinson’s disease. “The clinic’s holistic approach, including collaboration with OTs, PTs, psychologists, and even personal trainers, really resonated with me,” she said. “If all goes well, I hope to return for my Capstone project.”油

Looking ahead, Natalie envisions incorporating her passion for yoga into her OT practice, seeing great potential in using yoga as an intervention for clients with neurological conditions.

Building Lasting Connections

Beyond academics, Natalie highlighted the strong sense of community within her cohort.

“The small class sizes allow us to form meaningful connections and friendships,” she said. “Having a support system has made all the difference in overcoming the challenges of the program.”

Advice for Future Students

For those considering a career in occupational therapy at 返字心頭, Natalie offered valuable advice: “Take a leap of faith and trust the process. The faculty and peers will support you every step of the way, and the experience will help you grow both personally and professionally.”

At 返字心頭, we know that the future of healthcare depends on collaboration. Thats why interprofessional education (IPE) is a vital component of how we prepare our students to lead in todays complex healthcare environment. Recently, Jaanam T. one of our Master of Health Administration students demonstrated this commitment firsthand, representing WCU as a student leader and facilitator at the University of Texas at Austins IPE event.

Bringing together students from various healthcare disciplines, the IPE event challenged participants to work collaboratively on real-world healthcare scenarios. Jaanam was selected to serve as a facilitator a role that required not only confidence and communication, but also the ability to guide a team of diverse professionals through thoughtful discussions and problem-solving.

One of the key topics explored was the growing influence of vaping among youth. As facilitator, she helped lead their group in examining this issue from multiple perspectives medical, administrative, behavioral, and social while encouraging each team member to contribute their insights. It was an experience that brought their WCU coursework to life and showcased the importance of interprofessional collaboration in developing holistic, effective solutions.

Being part of this event really reinforced how well-prepared I am for real-world healthcare challenges, Jaanam shared. WCU has given me the foundation to lead, communicate, and collaborate in diverse settings. This event was a great example of what healthcare looks like when we work together.

Beyond the engaging discussions, the IPE experience offered valuable opportunities to network with peers and professionals, receive constructive feedback, and build confidence in decision-making. Perhaps most importantly, it emphasized a core truth in healthcare: No single discipline can do it all. The best outcomes come from teams that communicate openly, respect each others expertise, and work together with the patient in mind.

Currently balancing coursework with a career as a behavioral technician, she credits the flexibility of WCUs online program for allowing them to pursue both professional and academic goals. Outside the classroom and clinic, they enjoy traveling, reading, and diving into historical topics all of which fuel a lifelong curiosity and passion for learning.

Events like this are more than just academic exercises they are essential learning experiences that prepare students for the realities of todays healthcare system. At WCU, we are proud to support interprofessional opportunities that challenge our students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and grow as leaders.

We encourage all students to take part in IPE activities whenever possible. Whether you’re pursuing a career in nursing, administration, therapy, or any other health profession, these experiences are invaluable for developing the skills and mindset needed to make a lasting impact in the field

Faith P.s path to becoming an occupational therapy doctorate student at 返字心頭s Center for Graduate Studies wasnt always clear. Her journey, which began with a kinesiology degree, has now led her to a program she is passionate about and one that is helping her build the career she always dreamed of.

Faiths love for the human body and its systems started early. She pursued a bachelors in kinesiology at another university, knowing she wanted a career that allowed her to understand and work with the body. It wasnt until she met a friend someone who had already graduated from her alma mater that she first learned about occupational therapy.

She was in the process of coming back for some additional credits to pursue the masters program [at West Coast], Faith explained. We got to talking, and she introduced me to the world of OT. She raved about it, and as she shared more, I just fell in love with the idea.

This conversation sparked something in Faith. It was her friends enthusiasm for OT and her own deep interest in human health that made Faith take the leap and apply for the OT program at WCU-CGS.

She told me the program was amazing, and that West Coast had a great track record with the NBCOT exam, Faith recalled. That was really what sold me, knowing the program was designed to help me succeed.

Faith was also pleasantly surprised by the support and resources available at WCU-CGS, which exceeded her expectations.

I never expected to have so many opportunities to connect with people, she said. The resources, the community its all beyond what I imagined. Im not just learning a profession; Im building long-lasting relationships and a career that I never thought I could create.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Faiths experience has been the strong sense of community shes found at WCU-CGS.

The connections Ive made have been crucial to my success, she shared. From the moment I stepped on campus, Ive felt like Im part of something bigger than myself.

Faiths cohort has become like a family. We talk every day, even outside of school. Its not just about OT. Weve really become close friends, she added.

Shes also been able to build relationships with faculty, mentors, and other students through various leadership roles. Faith serves as a coordinator for Peer Assisted Learning (PALs), where upper-term students mentor newer cohorts, helping them with practical exams and study sessions.

Its an amazing experience, Faith said. Its like Im giving back what Ive learned, and its been a great way to connect with other students.

In addition, Faith is the president of the Student Occupational Therapy Association, where she works alongside other student leaders to promote community engagement, fundraising, and wellness for OT students.

I never expected to be president of SOTA, she laughed. But I had the support of my community. They encouraged me to step into this leadership role, and with their help, Ive been able to succeed.

In contrast to her undergrad experience, WCU-CGS has provided Faith with a clear and structured path.

They gave me everything I needed classes, timelines, even resources like the library and fieldwork coordinators, Faith said. Its been so much more organized and supportive than my undergrad experience. I feel like I finally have the guidance I need.

For anyone considering a career in occupational therapy, Faith had some wise advice: Just go for it. Dont doubt yourself. Its hard work, but you can do hard things.

返字心頭s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is all about empowering students to make a real impact on peoples lives. For Lilia F., that meant relocating from Northern California to Southern California to join WCUs Center for Graduate Studies. Drawn by the supportive faculty and welcoming community, shes found her place here, sharing how WCU has fueled her passion for physical therapy and helped her grow in ways she hadnt expected.油

Personal Inspiration

Lilias passion for physical therapy began with a deeply personal experience. Her love for sports and activities made physical therapy an ideal career path.

What got me into PT was actually seeing my brother go through it when I was younger, and he wasnt fully able-bodied, she explained, reflecting on her younger years. Seeing how the physical therapist kind of engaged him into getting back into activity and helping him get his motivation back… really brought to light at a young age that helping people is what I wanted to do.

Choosing 返字心頭

Lilias search for the right DPT program led her to WCU, where she felt a unique connection with the faculty and the student community.

I knew I wanted to stay in California, she said. When I met the professors and interacted with them they were the ones that really showed the most care to their students. The compassion and dedication of the faculty have proven invaluable. I can say most of those professors were the reasons why we continued and didnt give up.

Support from Faculty

Throughout her journey, Lilia has felt deeply supported by her professors, who have cultivated an encouraging and understanding environment. She noted one professor’s approach, saying, He felt the energy that we were feeling in the room. He felt the nerves; he felt the anxiety. And he took the time to speak with us and tell us, you know, Do your best, and thats all that should matter. These reassurances have helped her, and her cohort gain the confidence to succeed.

A Cohort That Feels Like Family

The support within Lilias cohort has been just as meaningful. “No matter what, whenever something happened to a student, we backed each other up we wanted to make sure our class was a family, and we had each others backs. Lilia appreciates her bond with her classmates, who offer support through challenges and share in each others triumphs.

White Coat Ceremony: A Symbol of Transition

Recently, Lilia celebrated the White Coat Ceremony, a symbolic milestone for DPT students. Today were doing our white coat ceremony, which signifies the end of our didactics… and now starting in September, were out in clinics treating patients. This transition marks a significant shift from classroom learning to real-world clinical practice.

Preparing for Clinical Rotations

Lilia and her cohort are about to begin their full clinical rotations, where they will apply the skills, theyve learned. Many will stay in California. However, some will choose to travel out of state. Im very excited for the hands-on Im ready to work with the patients, building that connection, seeing the results.

Resources and Lasting Faculty Connections

WCUs DPT program has equipped students with extensive resources, from faculty guidance to administrative support. Lilia emphasized the facultys enduring commitment: Our professors have been there for us no matter what, and they even state to this day that theyre going to be with us even after. We can call them at any time.

Advice for Future DPT Students

Lilias advice to prospective students is simple: Do it. It definitely challenges you, but the most important thing that helps me, especially being far away from my family and friends, is to take time for yourself because without yourself, youre not going to get through the program. Without a mindset that is positive, you can get lost. Doing stuff that reminded me of who I am and what I love aside from studying thats really what helped me. She believes in prioritizing personal well-being as the foundation for academic success.

Be a Part of the WCU Physical Therapy Community

返字心頭s Doctor of Physical Therapy program is more than an academic path; its a supportive, inspiring community that fosters the next generation of physical therapists. With dedicated professors, close-knit cohorts, and hands-on clinical experience, WCUs DPT program prepares students like Lilia to thrive in a meaningful, patient-focused career.油

For Megha C., the path to becoming a speech-language pathologist began when she was just 10 years old. Growing up in a close-knit joint family, Megha witnessed her youngest cousins transformation through speech therapy.

He was almost 4 and not speaking. Now, at 13, hes completely verbal, she recalled with pride. Seeing that change inspired me to dedicate my life to this field.

Speech-language pathology is a dynamic field that extends far beyond helping people speak.

We work with everyone from infants in the NICU to senior citizens. The field encompasses various specialties, including voice disorders, stuttering, feeding and swallowing, and cognitive-communication issues in stroke patients. It even delves into literacy disorders and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices for nonverbal people. Its such a vast and rewarding field, Megha said. Youre always learning, and theres never a dull moment.油

Meghas passion for helping others took root early. In middle school, she co-founded Lywood Awareness Buddies (LAB), an organization that bridged the gap between general and special education students. From presenting at Board of Education meetings to organizing community symposiums, Megha demonstrated her commitment to fostering inclusion and understanding. Today, LABs legacy continues, influencing younger generations to embrace diversity and empathy.

Fast forward to her time at 返字心頭, Megha relocated from New Jersey to Dallas to make the most of her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) program.油

Even though the program is online, I wanted the experience of a new city and the opportunity to connect with my peers and professors in person, she explained. The 返字心頭 Texas campus and supportive environment have made her feel at home, offering study spaces and a welcoming community.

As an online student, Megha remains deeply engaged. She serves as the president of WCUs chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) and was recently elected to its national Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy (IDEA) work group. Her leadership roles allow her to advocate for a more inclusive environment, a cause close to her heart as a South Asian daughter of immigrants.

The programs flipped classroom model and on-site immersives have broadened Meghas horizons.

I came in set on working with children with autism, but now Im exploring stuttering and neuro disorders, she shared. These experiences, coupled with the support of faculty and Program Dean, have bolstered her confidence. Our professors genuinely care about us as individuals, not just as students.

For now, Megha remains focused on her clinical placements, eagerly anticipating the day she can help others find their voice, just as her cousin once did.

When Associate Professor Sunil T. walks into a classroom, he brings with him over two decades of clinical experience and a passion for shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals. With 11 years at 返字心頭s Orange County campus, Sunil has been a guiding force for countless nursing students, helping them navigate their academic and professional journeys.

A Global Nursing Career

Sunils path to teaching was paved with hands-on experience across the globe. After earning his bachelors degree in India, he began his career as a registered nurse. “I worked at the bedside in various capacitiesemergency rooms, intensive care units, and med-surge, Sunil shared. His clinical expertise extended to specialized areas such as plastic surgery and emergency care, where he spent the majority of his time.

Teaching was always on his horizon. “In India, I taught nursing students, and that experience stayed with me, he said. When I moved to the U.S., I saw an opportunity to continue teaching while bringing my global perspective to a diverse student body.

A Culture of Support and Inclusion

Sunil credits 返字心頭s supportive environment as a key factor in his professional growth and his ability to contribute to student success. The leadership here is incredibly accommodating, he said. They provided resources I needed to transition smoothly into teaching in a new country.

The universitys commitment to diversity has been pivotal in Sunils journey. West Coast embraces people from all backgrounds, he noted. This inclusivity creates a rich learning environment where students and faculty can thrive together.

Student-Centered Education

For Sunil, the real reward of teaching lies in witnessing his students transformation. “返字心頭 is truly student-centric, he emphasized. I teach pharmacology, which is one of the first courses students take, and nursing integration, their final class. Seeing their growth from day one to graduation is incredibly fulfilling.

He recalled the impact of the universitys comprehensive support system, which includes academic specialists, mentoring programs, and student services. Students often tell me how much they value the guidance they receive. Its a collaborative effort that ensures their success.

Preparing Students for Real-World Challenges

Sunils diverse professional background allows him to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for the realities of healthcare. In India, nursing practices and resources differ significantly from the U.S., he explained. Sharing these global perspectives helps students understand the importance of adaptability and cultural competence in patient care.

This approach resonates deeply with students, particularly in the diverse communities they serve. Our students are trained to be empathetic, inclusive, and effective healthcare providers, Sunil said.

Fostering Growth Through Innovation

Sunil values the academic adaptability at 返字心頭, which allows him to innovate in his teaching methods. I have the flexibility to tailor my classes to meet students needs while staying within the curriculum, he said. This not only enhances their learning experience but also prepares them for the dynamic nature of healthcare.

Additionally, the university encourages faculty professional development. I completed my Doctorate of Nursing Practice while teaching full-time, Sunil shared. The administrations support and the universitys flexibility made it possible.

A Legacy of Student Success

Sunils commitment to his students goes beyond the classroom. Every graduation is a celebration of their hard work and growth, he said. Knowing I played a part in their journey is what drives me.

Reflecting on his time at 返字心頭, This is a place where students and faculty are empowered to succeed. Its an honor to be part of a community that values growth, collaboration, and, most importantly, student success. he said.

WCU Dental Hygiene Smile Camp 2025

Another year, another fantastic Smile Camp hosted by our outstanding Dental Hygiene faculty and students at 返字心頭-Orange County.

Providing Free Dental Care & Education

Held in celebration of Childrens Dental Health month, Smile Camp is a special event designed to provide local children with free dental services while educating them on the importance of good oral hygiene.

“Smile Camp is a community service event that the dental hygiene program puts on for students to work with children in our community. We do free cleanings and X-rays and even some sealants,” WCU dental hygiene instructor and BSDH alumna Katie B. shared.

The event also featured a dedicated education room where children could learn about oral hygiene in an engaging way.

We take students after they’re seen with the dentist and the hygienist, and they go to another room, and they get a lot of education where they learn more about brushing and flossing, Katie explained. They just get a better understanding about food and diet and how that reacts with their teeth.”

A Valuable Learning Experience for WCU Students

Smile Camp is not only a rewarding experience for the children but also for the 返字心頭 Dental Hygiene students who participate.

“We take all the applications that we’ve used and taught them for the last three or four terms, and we apply it today where they just focus on children,” Katie shared. ” It’s a great place because we have all the balloons and everything to make it so welcoming for everybody to come.”

For many students, Smile Camp offers their first real-world experience working with pediatric patients.

“The students get to use their skills, and while we apply a lot of our application on adults, they don’t get a lot of experience with children. So, this is a great opportunity for all the students to have some experience time with children,” Katie added.

A Strong Community Turnout

This years Smile Camp was a resounding success, with an overwhelming response from the community.

“Today, the feedback has been awesome. We’ve had such a turnout that we have people waiting in line, which is wonderful, Katie said. The students are so eager to keep working. They have scheduled times to be here, but so many are just over their scheduled time because they see the benefit of volunteering. Community is a huge part of dental hygiene.”

About the WCU Dental Hygiene Clinic

The impact of Smile Camp extends beyond a single event 返字心頭s Dental Hygiene Clinic continues to serve the community year-round.
