What Is the Most Common Summer Nursing Program for High Schoolers?

If you’re a high school senior or recent graduate looking to break into the world of nursing, summer is a great time to explore hands-on learning opportunities designed just for you. In fact, you might even come across nursing programs for high school students, like camps or college immersion experiences that give you a preview of whats ahead.

These experiences can be a great way to confirm your interest in nursing before committing to a degree program. Once youre ready to take that next step into college-level training, one degree option tends to take the lead:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

If youre planning a career in nursing long-term or want to eventually move into advanced practice or leadership roles, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing could be a great fit. Youll receive a broader education than an Associate Degree in Nursing, with courses that cover everything from public health to nursing research.

Starting your BSN in the summer lets you jump into core nursing classes early, which could help you graduate sooner. Whats more, if your schedule is already packed, some campuses offer flexible options, such as a Working Professional pace or an Evening & Weekend format, so you can move forward without having to make any compromises.

What Are the Most Common Summer Nursing 返字心頭for RNs?

Already have your RN license but looking to move up? Summer nursing programs arent just for first-time students. They can be a great way to level up your credentials without putting your career on pause. You can generally start with a BSN or move straight into a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.

RN to BSN

If youve earned your ADN and want to continue growing in your career, an RN to BSN program gives you the opportunity to build on what you already know. You’ll explore courses in leadership, community health, and evidence-based practice, all while working toward your bachelors degree.

With many schools like WCU offering 100% online coursework and flexible pacing, you can balance your education with your current responsibilities and complete your degree on a schedule that works for you.

RN to MSN

An RN to MSN program allows you to go straight from your associate degree to graduate-level nursing courses no need to earn a separate BSN first.

This path means you build on your experience as a registered nurse while working toward your masters degree. The RN to MSN program at WCU offers six different specializations, so you can focus on the area of nursing that fits your career goals.

Master of Science in Nursing

If you currently hold a BSN, a Master of Science in Nursing can help you advance your healthcare career. WCUs MSN program is CCNE-accredited and combines online coursework with hands-on clinical experiences to help you grow your skills and expand your impact in nursing. You can earn your MSN or choose to further your education with a Post-Masters Certificate.

Post-Masters Certificates

Have you already earned a graduate degree in nursing? A Post-Masters Certificate gives you the chance to focus your expertise in a specific area. These programs are typically short, targeted, and designed to expand your qualifications without requiring a full second degree.

Take a look at the post-masters nursing certificates offered at WCU:

How To Choose a Nursing Program

Choosing the right summer nursing program starts with knowing where you stand and where you want to go. However, you need to be honest about what matters most to you, such as your goals, schedule, and learning style.

Before you decide on a program, ask yourself:

  • Do you need online flexibility, or do you prefer learning exclusively in person?
  • Would an accelerated pace or weekends and evening classes help you stay on track?
  • Are you managing other responsibilities like work or family that might impact your schedule?

Once youve thought about your priorities, make sure you determine if the nursing program you pick is accredited. An accredited program means youre getting a quality education that meets industry standards, and its often required for licensure, certification, and future job opportunities.

Miami Campus

If you’re facing long waitlists or steep tuition costs in your home state, relocating for nursing school might be your smartest next step. With its diverse communities, lower cost of living, and high employment of registered nurses (RNs), Florida could offer the opportunity youve been looking for.

At WCU-Miami, you can begin your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to BSN, or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program without a waitlist. You can prepare to make a difference through hands-on training, all while enjoying the advantages of studying in one of the most vibrant cities in the country.

Keep reading to find out why choosing a Florida nursing school could set you up for long-term success.

1. Tuition Costs in Florida Are Often Lower Than in Other States

If you’re planning to become a registered nurse but are worried about affording nursing school, relocating to Florida could ease the burden. Many schools in Florida offer competitive tuition and access to financial aid, scholarships, and grants.

This can help free up funds for your relocation, daily living, or professional development. Youll also likely benefit from Floridas overall lower cost of living compared to states like California or New York. That means more of your money can go toward building your future, not just getting through school.

    2. No Waitlist for the WCU Miami Nursing Programs

If youve been stuck on a waitlist or denied admission due to limited spots, relocating to Florida can help you skip the line. WCUs Miami campus does not have a waitlist for the BSN, LPN to BSN, or ADN programs, meaning you can start your nursing education without delay.

Being able to move forward with your career goals right away can reduce stress and give you more control over your timeline. It also lets you focus on practical preparations like moving, budgeting, or finding a part-time job rather than wondering when or if youll be accepted.

    4. Florida Has No State Income Tax

Florida is one of the few states that does not collect personal income tax, which means you get to keep more of your paycheck after graduation. If youre relocating from a state with high taxes, this financial benefit can be significant. Combined with lower living expenses in areas across Florida, it can help you manage debt, save for the future, or enjoy a better quality of life while launching your nursing career.

    5. Florida Nursing Licenses Support Career Flexibility

Even if you dont plan to stay in Florida long-term, earning your BSN in Florida can be a strategic move. Florida is a member state, so once licensed, you can practice in dozens of other participating states without needing to reapply for a license.

    • Verifying your nursing license
    • Completing a background check

8 Nurse Leader Skills to Master

What sets a good nurse apart from a great one? While possessing strong clinical skills can sometimes be enough to provide quality patient care, its excellent leadership skills that make the difference.

In fact, being a nurse . The profession demands a combination of hard skills, like foundational clinical knowledge, and soft skills, such as emotional intelligence and critical thinking. A highly competent nurse leader understands how to balance technical proficiency with interpersonal skills. This balance allows them to create a supportive, efficient healthcare environment where both their patients and team members feel valued.

Why Are Nurse Leadership Skills Important?

Strong nurse leaders are at the heart of effective healthcare teams. They advocate for patients, support their colleagues, and drive meaningful change within their organizations.

The right leadership skills ensure that nurses:

    • Strengthen patient safety by reducing errors
    • Deliver high-quality patient care
    • Improve operational efficiency for better patient outcomes
    • Maintain workplace morale and retain skilled nursing staff
    • Promote continuous learning

For registered nurses looking to transition into leadership roleswhether through a Post-Masters Certificate program, MSN program, or RN-to-MSN programmastering key clinical and interpersonal skills is crucial for success. Keep reading to learn about the eight essential leadership skills every nurse needs to thrive.

What Clinical Skills Should Nurse Leaders Have?

Nurses must be confident in their clinical experience while also making sure that their teams adhere to the best medical practices. An accredited nursing program prepares nurses to uphold patient safety, think critically in high-pressure situations, and implement practical healthcare solutions when it matters most. Here are a few clinical skills successful nurse leaders should have:

    1. Strong Clinical Decision-Making

Providing quality patient care starts with good decision-making. Even if nurse leaders arent at the bedside, their experience plays a major role in guiding teams. They must be able to assess patient conditions, interpret medical data, and empower their colleagues to make the best possible decisions.

A solid clinical foundation also helps nurse leaders spot early warning signs of complications and support nurses handling complex cases. Quick thinking and experience-based confidence in their expertise allows nurses to maintain high standards of care, even in fast-paced environments.

    2. Crisis Management

No two days in healthcare are the same. Medical emergencies, staffing shortages, and unexpected crises require nurses who can react without delay and stay calm under pressure. When every second counts, a great nurse leader can make all the difference. These professionals must know how to prioritize patient care, coordinate emergency response efforts across multiple departments, and train staff on protocols to ensure team preparedness. Whether it’s a cardiac arrest or a severe asthma attack, strong crisis management skills save lives.

    3. Healthcare Technology Proficiency

Modern healthcare relies on technology, and nurses must be competent when using digital tools. From electronic health records (EHRs) to telemedicine, understanding digital tools goes far. Being tech-savvy allows nurses to improve documentation accuracy, adopt new digital tools that can optimize workflow, and use data to track patient progress.

    4. Infection Control & Patient Safety Protocols

Keeping patients safe is at the core of nursing, which is why infection control is a shared responsibility across healthcare teams. Every nurse works to prevent infections and reduce risks by setting high standards and consistently following safety protocols. However, nurse leaders take on additional responsibilities to uphold safety compliance, educate colleagues on best practices, and implement strategies to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

What Soft Skills Should Nurse Leaders Have?

Beyond clinical expertise, great nurse leaders must also have compelling interpersonal and leadership skills. These soft skills help them foster teamwork, build trust, and create a positive work environmentultimately leading to better patient care. Take a look at several key soft skills every nurse leader should develop:

    5. Effective Communication

Nurse leaders often act as bridges between teams, which is why direct, confident communication is a must-have for organizational success. On a daily basis, theyre expected to give clear instructions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and educate patients and families.

    6. Critical Thinking

In healthcare, every decision matters. Nurses need sharp problem-solving skills to navigate difficult situations, make data-driven choices, and anticipate challenges before they arise.

Sound critical thinking allows them to make informed decisions in high-pressure situations and identify opportunities for process improvement. Excellent nurse leaders stand out by seeing situations from different perspectives and making decisive choices.

    7. Time Management

With countless responsibilities, nurses must know how to prioritize tasks and delegate wisely, all while keeping their units running smoothly. Balancing urgent demands while maintaining a steady workflow helps them support both their patients and teams. Good time management not only improves efficiency but also prevents any potential staff burnout.

    8. Emotional Intelligence

Exceptional leadership extends beyond clinical expertise. Nurses must understand and support both their patients and staff, which is why emotional intelligence is so critical.

High emotional intelligence allows nurses to:

    • Nurture a team culture rooted in respect
    • Provide support to patients and staff by preemptively recognizing their needs
    • Navigate and resolve conflicts effectivelyespecially in high-stress situations
    • Lead with compassion, offering guidance to patients and families during difficult times

Queenstar K. knew balancing school and family responsibilities while attending 返字心頭 would not be easy, but one thing she didnt expect was to fail a class. However, with the support of WCU staff and her unwavering determination, she crossed the stage as a proud BSN graduate in 2024.

There was a point where I thought I was done, Queenstar admitted. I said to myself, Im not going any further. But one professor told me, You are not quitting. You will get through this. That encouragement pushed me to keep going.

Failing a class was a tough blow, but Queenstar viewed it as a stepping stone rather than a setback. She found strength in the camaraderie of her peers, particularly her new study group.

We studied together, held each others hands, and sometimes met in coffee shops to keep pushing through, she said. They even called me grandma because I was always pushing them, even if they were sleeping!

Queenstar also leaned heavily on the tools and resources offered by WCU.

The professors were amazing, and I took full advantage of the resources. I met with professors one-on-one, joined study groups, and used every tool the school had to offer, she shared.

Her perseverance didnt go unnoticed by her family, who traveled from Canada, New York, and Connecticut to celebrate her graduation. They are waiting to scream when I cross the stage, she said proudly.

Looking ahead to 2025, Queenstar is ready to reenter the workforce and make a difference as a nurse. She also plans to pursue her masters degree.

If you know nursing is your passion, focus on it, she said. Dont do it because you need money but do it from your heart.

    No-Waitlist Schools

If youre looking to advance your nursing education, you may have encountered a waitlist or know someone else who has at some point. Waiting for acceptance can be frustrating, especially when it delays your career goals and youre ready to start now.

Rather than putting your future on hold, consider a school that values your passion and commitment to succeed. 返字心頭 (WCU) proudly offers an accredited, no-waitlist Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at its Miami and Dallas-area campuses, allowing you to begin quickly without sacrificing quality.

Starting sooner means you can begin making a difference sooner. Read on to learn more about nursing school waitlists and why choosing a program without a waiting list can be a smart move.

What is the Average Waitlist Time for a Nursing Program?

Since every school is different, the average wait time for entering a nursing program can vary significantly. While certain nursing programs may allow entry within only a few semesters, others might require applicants to wait several years.

This is because nursing waitlists vary widely depending on factors such as:

    • Your GPA
    • The nursing courses youve completed
    • How long youve been waiting to enter the nursing program

Although waiting to make it off the list is an option, it may mean postponing your nursing career for months or even years. WCUs no-waitlist admissions process allows qualified applicants to begin their education sooner and gain the hands-on experience needed to succeed in the nursing field.

What Are the Benefits of No-Waitlist Schools?

Beyond prompt enrollment, there are other benefits to attending no-waitlist schools. If youre a prospective nurse, consider the time and uncertainty that can arise while waiting to hear back on your acceptance. Below are a few advantages of attending a no-waitlist school.

    1. You Can Start Your Nursing Career Faster

It makes sense that no-waitlist nursing programs can save you precious time toward starting your nursing career. Some BSN programs offer accelerated paces, allowing you to complete your education more efficiently. In fact, the BSN programs at WCUs Texas and Miami campuses can be completed in as little as 39 months at the Accelerated pace.

Starting your nursing career faster can also empower you to fill the gap. In high-population states like Texas and Florida, completing your education sooner positions you to make a difference in the expansive healthcare industry.

    2. Youll Reduce Stress From Uncertainty

Waiting to hear back from a nursing program can feel overwhelming, especially when your future plans are on hold. The uncertainty of not knowing when or even if youll be accepted into a program can add unnecessary stress to the experience.

With accredited no-waitlist nursing programs, you can minimize that uncertainty and put your energy into preparing for your nursing career without delays.

    3. You Can Save Money on Your Education

If youre located in a high cost-of-living state with long nursing school waitlists (like California), you might want to consider relocating for nursing school. Moving to states like Florida or Texas to pursue your BSN degree can both eliminate waitlists and make your education more affordable. Youll receive a quality education for less.

    4. Youre Able to Enroll Anytime Without Pressure

Knowing you can enroll right away can give you a clear timeline for your education, allowing you to focus on your studies and career goals instead of worrying about waitlists or reapplying year after year.

Whether youre just getting started in the field of nursing or transitioning from another healthcare field, you can rest easy knowing that you can start your education on your own terms.

Skip Nursing School Waitlists and Graduate Sooner at WCU

If youre ready to embark on a career helping others, you dont have to wait. WCUs accredited BSN program at its Miami and Dallas-area campuses offers the hands-on training needed to succeed. WCU-Ontario BSN graduate gives speech during pinning ceremonty

At 返字心頭s January 2025 nursing pinning, student speaker Valerie A. took the stage with a message that resonated deeply with her fellow graduates: Remember your why.

Reflecting on the challenges they faced rigorous exams, sleepless nights, and the weight of clinical responsibilities Valerie acknowledged the perseverance that brought each student to this moment. But beyond academic struggles, she urged her peers to look inward and recall the deeper reason they chose this path in the first place.

For Valerie, that moment of clarity came in January 2019 when she stepped into an overcrowded emergency room for the first time.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, where she performed CPR on 839 patients. What she saw the patients sitting on floors with oxygen tanks, isolation tents overflowing, and nurses crying in supply rooms on their nonexistent breaks left an indelible mark. These experiences, she said, put lifes everyday anxieties into perspective and ignited a calling that would change the trajectory of her life.

“I walked into that ER as a blank slate, unsure of how this experience was going to change me, but within a few months, I found myself applying to 返字心頭 on a path that would change the trajectory of my life forever,” she said.

Now, as she and her classmates step into the next phase of their careers, Valerie acknowledged that new challenges await. Nursing is more than a job it is a profound responsibility. They will witness both the fragility of life and the joy of bringing new life into the world.

“We’re going to experience a new form of anxiety that will challenge our innermost tenacity. You may have the unimaginable duty to hold somebody’s hand in their final moments. You may also witness the joy of bringing a new life into the world, but ultimately, you will share in the raw vulnerability that patients experience when they walk into those acute care settings,” Valerie said. “I want you all to remember we’ve been chosen for this honor, and I want you all to remember your ‘why.’ We’re about to have a profound impact on the people around us, and it is our insatiable appetite to help others that have shaped us into the nurses who sit here today.”

Valerie closed her address with gratitude thanking her family, professors, and fellow students for their support throughout the journey. And as she looked ahead to the future, she left her peers with a powerful reminder:

“We all had a dream stepping through the doors of 返字心頭. Now, weve achieved the ultimate accomplishment. Congratulations, January 2025 cohort I cant wait to see you all in the clinical setting.”

Cynthia C., BSN 24, never expected her life to look like it does today. After being diagnosed with stage III cancer, everything shifted in an instant. Yet, this challenging experience became the catalyst for a new, purposeful journey.

Cancer gave me a second chance at life, Cynthia reflected. Now, I understand my purpose. If I wasnt sure before, I am now.

During her chemotherapy treatment, Cynthia was supported by a nurse-patient navigator who played a vital role in her recovery. At the time, Cynthia was also pregnant with her sixth child, a situation that deepened her appreciation for the healthcare professionals around her.

After going through chemo and meeting other patients, I told my mom I wanted to work in oncology, she shared. My goal was to pay it forward.

Cynthia started working in an administrative role in a hospitals oncology unit, where an oncologist saw potential in her and encouraged her to pursue nursing.

He kept telling me I would make a great nurse, she recalled. You empathize with the patients, he said. You genuinely care.

Her determination to help cancer patients soon became her lifes mission. Despite having no prior healthcare experience, Cynthia found the work to be instinctive.

Having gone through cancer myself, I can truly empathize with all of them, she said. Its incredibly fulfilling.

Cynthia enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at 返字心頭s Los Angeles campus, graduating with cum laude honors this past July. Balancing full-time work, her studies, and raising six children as a single mother was no small feat.

I didnt have a single day off, she said. Every day was either work, school, or clinical, and I still had to go home and be a mom.

Despite the challenges, Cynthia is grateful for her experience at WCU and the supportive community of students and faculty.

Im so thankful for the experience and proud to be a part of West Coast, she said. The staff and students I met still stay in touch. Its like a family.

Armed with her BSN degree, Cynthia is more committed than ever to helping others navigate their cancer diagnoses. Having lost her aunt to cancer as a teenager, she understands the pain and uncertainty that comes with the disease.

Today, she has become a trusted resource in her community, offering support, advocacy, and encouragement to anyone who reaches out.

Cancer isnt something you can cover with a bandage. Many people dont know where to turn, Cynthia said.

Cynthias goal is to become a nurse practitioner and continue her work in oncology. The relationships she forms with her patients give her work profound meaning.

I see myself in them, she said. Were all afraid of the unknown, but having someone to hold your hand and guide you makes it a little easier. It lets them know theyre not alone.

Graduates from 返字心頭s Texas campus and Online 返字心頭gathered in front of friends and families this December at the Plano Event Center to celebrate the 2024 Commencement.

Master of Physician Assistant graduate Anthony I. said he always wanted to be in medicine, either as a doctor or a PA but wanted flexibility. As a PA, he said, you can switch specialties whenever you desire and thats what really sold him on the profession.

I never felt like a number at 返字心頭,” Anthony said. “I felt like they saw me as a person, and today, I’m most thankful to be completing my master’s program.

Already a licensed vocational nurse for over a decade, WCU-Texas BSN graduate Courtney W. was driven to earn the registered nurse title to unlock better career prospects.

“I was making good money in California, but I didnt have that RN title. I didn’t go straight to college right after high school, so it’s never too late,” she said.

A former Baylor University undergraduate with a degree in health science studies, Emma T. said she was drawn to the PA profession for its team-oriented approach and versatility.

I never thought I’d be standing here. I think it’s just something I’ve dreamed about and worked so hard for,” Emma said. “I know that this program prepared me well I was surrounded by such great friends and classmates and faculty that they never let me doubt myself.
